Three-card tarot reading: past, present and future

The three-card reading is the classic tarot spread and the one experienced readers reach for most, because almost any question fits into it. Here you can do it free and without an account, in its best-known form, past, present and future: where the matter came from, where it stands now and where it is heading. At the end, a short reading ties the three cards together.

How the three-card reading works

You type your question, or leave it open, then shuffle and tap three cards from the fan, in order. They turn over one at a time, each with its Rider-Waite illustration, its name and its orientation, upright or reversed. Below you get a reading for each position and, at the end, an overall reading that connects all three.

What each position means

  • Past. What brought the matter to this point: a cause, a decision or a wound that still weighs on it. Not ancient history, but whatever still has influence.
  • Present. Where you stand now and, often, what you are not seeing. This is the card to read slowly.
  • Future. Where the situation is heading if nothing changes. Not a sealed fate: the direction of the momentum.

How to read a three-card spread, step by step

Reading three tarot cards is simple if you always follow the same order, whether you use the site or your own deck:

  1. Phrase your question before you look. Open and specific: “What do I need to know about my situation at work?” works better than “Will I get promoted?”.
  2. Read each card in its position. The same card does not say the same thing in the past as it does in the future.
  3. Notice the orientation. A reversed card is not “the bad one”. It usually means that energy is blocked, delayed or turned inwards.
  4. Look at the spread as a whole. Count the major arcana, check for a repeated suit and notice any court cards (more on this below).
  5. Join the three into one sentence. Where you come from, where you are and where it is heading. If the sentence does not hold, go back to the middle card.
  6. End with one concrete step. A useful reading ends with something you can do this week, not with a verdict.

Major arcana, suits and court cards in a three-card spread

  • Major arcana. One major card is the axis of the spread. Two or three speak of a stage of your life, not a passing problem. None at all means an everyday matter that depends mostly on your own decisions.
  • A repeated suit. Wands speak of energy, projects and work in motion; Cups of emotions and relationships; Swords of thoughts, conflicts and decisions; Pentacles of money, the body and material things. If two or three cards share a suit, that is the real ground of the question.
  • Court cards. Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings usually point to people or attitudes: someone around you, or a way of acting you are being asked to adopt.

Two worked examples

This is how a real spread is read, with cards from the Rider-Waite deck the site uses.

A work question: past, present and future

Question: “Where is my situation at work heading?” These three cards come up, all upright:

  • Past: Five of Wands. Five figures clashing their staffs: friction, competition, a team where everyone pulls in a different direction.
  • Present: Four of Cups. A figure sitting under a tree, arms crossed, ignoring the cup a hand offers from a cloud. Apathy, disconnection and an opportunity in front of you that you are not looking at.
  • Future: Eight of Pentacles. A craftsman engraving coins one by one. Patient work, learning, getting better at a craft.

The pattern: there are no major arcana, so this is an everyday matter and it is in your hands. Three different suits tell a story that moves from action (Wands) to emotional fatigue (Cups) and then to the practical (Pentacles).

The reading in one sentence: “The clashes in the team have worn me out; now I am disconnected and may be missing an offer right in front of me; if I carry on, the way out is getting better at what I do, not winning arguments.” The concrete step: review which offers, courses or projects you have let pass lately. The Four of Cups asks you to look up.

A relationship question with a reversed card

Question: “How is my relationship right now?” Here the layout is you, the other person and the relationship:

  • You: Queen of Cups. Empathy, care, intuition.
  • The other person: The Hermit, reversed. The retreat this card asks for has gone too far: isolation, not letting anyone in.
  • The relationship: Two of Cups. Two people exchanging cups. Union, reciprocity, a bond with a real foundation.

The reading: the only major arcana card sits with the other person, so that is where the weight of the spread falls. In one sentence: “I give a lot, the other person has withdrawn more than usual, but what joins us is real.” The step: ask instead of assuming, without pushing.

Other three-card layouts

If three cards feel too short, the horseshoe tarot spread adds four positions (you, your surroundings, obstacles and the outcome) without the ten cards of the Celtic cross. And if you would rather decide what each position means, create your own tarot spread.

The positions can change while the cards stay the same. The site gives you the classic past, present and future, but you can reread your cards in another key if you choose it before shuffling:

  • Situation, obstacle, advice: when you feel stuck and want to know what is holding you back and what you can do.
  • You, the other person, the relationship: for questions about a partner, a friend or family, where there are two sides.
  • Mind, body, spirit: a check-in on how you are, without a specific question.
  • Option A, option B, what you are not seeing: for choosing between two paths. The third card shows what you are missing.

There is just one rule: choose the layout before you draw and do not change it afterwards. If you choose after seeing the cards, you will end up placing them where it suits you.

Which questions it suits best

Almost anything that is not a yes or no: a job change, a decision you have been putting off for weeks, a relationship whose direction you cannot see. If you need a closed answer, use the yes or no tarot reading; if the matter is tangled and you also want to see your surroundings and fears, move up to the Celtic cross tarot reading.

Common mistakes when reading three cards

  • Reading each card on its own. The point is the story they tell together.
  • Treating the future card as a sentence. The third card shows a tendency if nothing changes. You still get to decide.
  • Taking card names literally. Death is not about dying but about an ending that makes room for something else. The Tower is not certain disaster: it is something falling because it could not stand.
  • Asking the same thing until you get the answer you want. Rephrase the question instead.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to ask a question?

It is not required, but it helps. A specific question gives the positions their meaning; without one, the spread speaks about your moment in general.

What if all three cards are reversed?

Then the matter is blocked, or you are looking at it from the wrong side. It is not a disaster: it is an invitation to change your approach. Every card comes with its reversed meaning explained.

Can I repeat the reading with the same question?

Better not. One reading, one answer. If something is unclear, do a second reading with a more precise question, not the same one. And remember that Tarot Vera Luna is entertainment, not prediction.

What does it mean if the same card keeps coming up?

It cannot appear twice in one spread, because the deck has 78 different cards. But if a card returns across readings on different days, take it as a theme that insists: something in its meaning is still pending. Read its page calmly.

How many three-card readings can I do a day?

There is no limit. The sensible approach is one reading per question, and a few days before coming back to the same matter. For a quick check each morning there is the tarot card of the day.
