Tarot Birth Card Calculator: find your personality and soul cards

Your tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card that comes out of your date of birth. It never changes: it describes your temperament, the gifts you were born with and the kind of challenge that keeps coming back. Most people have two birth cards working as a pair, a personality card (how you show up in the world) and a soul card (what drives you underneath), and a few birthdays produce three.

Enter your birthday and the calculator shows your cards with their Rider-Waite artwork and what they mean. Further down you will find the method to do it by hand, a portrait of all 22 birth cards and what changes if you read with the Tarot de Marseille.

What a tarot birth card is

The idea borrows from numerology, which reduces a date to a number, and was popularised in tarot by the American author Mary K. Greer from the 1980s onwards: if every Major Arcana card carries a number from 1 to 22, your birth date points to one of them. A birth card is not a prediction. It is a portrait. It casts you as a character in the tarot, light side and shadow side, which is why so many readers use it as a mirror: when their birth card turns up in a spread, they know the reading is talking about them.

  • Your personality card is the two-digit number (10 to 22). It describes how you act, how others see you and the energy you bring to a room.
  • Your soul card is the single digit (1 to 9). It is more private: what you are here to learn and what moves you when nobody is watching.
  • If your sum lands straight on a single digit, both cards are the same: who you are inside and what you show outside line up, and that card carries double weight in your life.

How to calculate your birth card by hand

All you need is addition. This is Greer's method, the one most tarot readers use:

  1. Add your birth month, day and year as whole numbers. For July 23, 1985: 7 + 23 + 1985 = 2015.
  2. Add the digits of the total: 2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 8.
  3. If the result is higher than 22, add the digits again. For March 18, 1965: 3 + 18 + 1965 = 1986, then 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24, so 2 + 4 = 6.
  4. That number is your personality card. If it has two digits, add them to find your soul card: 15 becomes 1 + 5 = 6.
  5. 22 is The Fool, the card numbered 0 in the deck.

A few worked examples so you can check your maths:

  • July 23, 1985: 2015 → 8. Strength is both personality and soul card.
  • September 19, 1990: 2018 → 11 → 2. Justice outside, The High Priestess inside.
  • January 1, 1990: 1992 → 21 → 3. The World and The Empress.
  • March 8, 1964: 1975 → 22 → 4. The Fool and The Emperor.
  • October 10, 1952: 1972 → 19 → 10 → 1. Three cards: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician.

Some sites add every digit of the date one by one (2 + 3 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5). Both methods always agree on the soul card, but now and then they give a different personality card. Neither is the one true method: pick one and stay consistent.

The nine birth card families

Each soul card from 1 to 9 heads a family, what Greer called a constellation: cards whose numbers reduce to the same digit share an underlying thread, each in its own key. That is why a 19 and a 10 feel so much like a 1, even though The Sun, the Wheel and The Magician look nothing alike.

Tarot birth card meanings: all 22, one by one

Read your personality card and your soul card separately, then put them together: the first tells you how you move through life, the second why. Every card links to its full page if you want its upright, reversed, love and career meanings too.

I · The Magician: the one who makes things happen

You have a way with words, a quick mind and a knack for starting things: where others see a problem, you see tools on the table. Your challenge is to finish what you start and never promise more than you will deliver.

Magician people learn by watching and sell what they learn: salespeople, communicators, founders who build a business out of almost nothing. In love they seduce through conversation and need a partner who can keep up. Their shadow is scattered energy and, on bad days, the temptation to manipulate. As a soul card (for Wheel of Fortune and Sun people) it asks you to stop waiting for the right moment and use what you already have. Full meaning: The Magician.

II · The High Priestess: the one who knows without being told

You run on intuition: you pick up what is left unsaid, you keep other people's secrets and you need silence to think. Your challenge is to share what you know instead of keeping it all inside.

High Priestess people live inwardly. They read, study and observe, and they reach conclusions before anyone else, even if they take a while to say them out loud. They thrive in research, psychology, writing and any work that asks for discretion. In love they are deep and slow to open up; once they trust, they mean it. Their shadow is isolation, watching life from the shore. This is the soul card of Justice and Judgement. More on The High Priestess.

III · The Empress: the one who makes things grow

You are creativity, care and pleasure: you make a home wherever you go and things bloom in your hands. Your challenge is to look after yourself with the same generosity you give everyone else.

Sensual, affectionate and gifted with taste, Empress people need beauty and time in nature. They shine in art, design, cooking, parenting and every caring profession. In love they give a lot, and they give it physically: hugs, food, little gestures. Their shadow is overprotection, excess and the quiet need to be loved in return for all that giving. This is the soul card of The Hanged Man and The World. Full meaning: The Empress.

IV · The Emperor: the one who builds and protects

You are structure and keeping your word: you organise, decide and protect your people. Your challenge is to loosen your grip and let others see that you need looking after too.

Emperor people build for the long haul: companies, families, projects that last. They are good at leading, managing, setting rules and stepping up when someone needs to hold steady. In love they are loyal and protective, though talking about feelings does not come easily. Their shadow is rigidity and control, especially when they are afraid. This is the soul card of Death and The Fool, which explains why so many free-spirited Fool people end up building something solid. Full meaning: The Emperor.

V · The Hierophant: the one who teaches what they learned

You are a guide and a keeper of memory: values, traditions and passing on what you know matter to you. Your challenge is not to mistake your rules for the truth, and to listen to people who think differently.

Hierophant people end up giving advice whether they look for the role or not: teachers, mentors, counsellors, people who hold communities and institutions together. In love they want commitment and shared rituals, and the word "forever" does not scare them. Their shadow is dogmatism and needing the group's approval. This is the soul card of Temperance. Full meaning: The Hierophant.

VI · The Lovers: the one who lives through connection

You are connection and choice: relationships are your school and your engine, and you look for harmony everywhere. Your challenge is to choose for yourself, even when the choice will not please everyone.

Lovers people have charm, an eye for beauty and a fine radar for other people. They work well in teams, mediation, public relations and anything that brings people together. In love they give everything, and that is their lesson: not to lose themselves in the other person, and not to postpone choices out of fear of losing someone. Their shadow is indecision. This is the soul card of The Devil. Full meaning: The Lovers.

VII · The Chariot: the one who keeps moving forward

You are willpower in motion: you set a goal and go for it, with ambition and a little impatience. Your challenge is to know where you are going before you accelerate, and to brake now and then.

Chariot people need movement: travel, challenges, competition, projects with deadlines. They lead well in times of change and can pull a stuck team back into motion. In love they are passionate and protective, but they need room of their own and a partner who will not ask them to sit still. Their shadow is running forward to escape, mistaking speed for progress. This is the soul card of The Tower. Full meaning: The Chariot.

VIII · Strength: courage that does not need to shout

You are quiet strength: you endure, you calm others down and you tame your impulses with patience. Your challenge is not to carry everything without asking for help, and to let yourself get angry when it is called for.

The woman on the card opens the lion's jaws without force, and that is how Strength people work: they persuade through calm, not pressure. They do well in care work, teaching, working with animals and managing crises. In love they are tender and firm at once. Their shadow is the pride of never asking for help and anger stored away. This is the soul card of The Star. In the Tarot de Marseille this number belongs to Justice: see the Marseille section below. Full meaning: Strength.

IX · The Hermit: the one who looks for their own light

You are the seeker with your own judgement: you need time alone and you prefer fewer things done well. Your challenge is to leave the cave and share the light you have found.

The Hermit is the wise one in the group, the one who studies deeply and ignores fashions. Hermit people shine in research, teaching, philosophy and crafts that demand precision. In love they have few bonds and very deep ones, and they need a partner who respects their silences. Their shadow is isolation, perfectionism and an emotional distance that can read as coldness. This is the soul card of The Moon. Full meaning: The Hermit.

X · Wheel of Fortune: the one who lives in cycles

You are adaptability and change: your life moves through very different chapters and you tend to land on your feet. Your challenge is not to leave everything to luck, and to decide for yourself when the wheel turns.

Wheel people have a nose for opportunity and a wide view of how things repeat. They do well in fast-moving fields, trade, finance, travel or any job where no two days are alike. In love their stories often start by chance and change their direction. Their shadow is fatalism and instability. Their soul card is The Magician: luck pays best when the tools are already in your hands. Full meaning: Wheel of Fortune.

XI · Justice: the one who needs things to add up

You are balance and truth: you think clearly, stand up for what is fair and cannot stand cheating. Your challenge is to judge with your heart as well as your head.

Justice people have integrity, an analytical mind and a finely tuned moral sense. They excel in law, mediation, accounting, science and any task that calls for objectivity. In love they want reciprocity, giving and receiving in equal measure. Their shadow is coldness, rigidity and keeping score. Their soul card is The High Priestess, a reminder that truth can be felt as well as reasoned. In the Tarot de Marseille this number is Strength. Full meaning: Justice.

XII · The Hanged Man: the one who sees the world upside down (and is right)

You are a different point of view: you see what others miss because you dare to look from another angle. Your challenge is to give yourself without sacrificing yourself, and not to wait forever for the perfect moment.

Hanged Man people are patient, creative and rich inside, often with an artistic, spiritual or helping vocation. They know how to wait and how to let go. In love they give a great deal, sometimes too much: their lesson is not to confuse love with renunciation. Their shadow is victimhood and paralysis. Their soul card is The Empress, which asks them to turn that unusual vision into something you can touch. Full meaning: The Hanged Man.

XIII · Death: the one who is reborn as often as it takes

You are transformation: you know how to close chapters, cut what is not needed and start again with the essentials. Your challenge is not to destroy things out of fear, and to accept that some changes are slow.

Do not worry: Death as a birth card has nothing sinister about it. It belongs to intense, deep people who seem to have lived several lives in one and who are good company for others in crisis. They shine in psychology, medicine, turnarounds and every kind of transition work. In love they live relationships that change them completely. Their shadow is clinging to what is over, or the opposite, cutting ties without looking back. Their soul card is The Emperor: after every ending comes building. Full meaning: Death.

XIV · Temperance: the one who finds the middle way

You are balance and alchemy: you blend what looks incompatible, ease tension and heal just by being there. Your challenge is not to end up in no man's land just to avoid extremes.

Temperance people have patience, tact and a steady hand for mixing things: ingredients, people, ideas. They stand out in health, therapy, cooking, mediation and any art that needs measure. In love they want a calm relationship and are good at reconciling. Their shadow is lukewarmness, people-pleasing and postponing what hurts. Their soul card is The Hierophant: what you heal, you can also teach. Full meaning: Temperance.

XV · The Devil: magnetism and its price

You are desire, ambition and charisma: you attract, you persuade and you know what you want from the material world. Your challenge is not to let your attachments run your life, and to choose freely what you bind yourself to.

Having The Devil as a birth card does not make you a bad person: it gives you energy, humour, sensuality and a nose for business. Devil people shine in marketing, enterprise, entertainment and anywhere charm counts. In love they are passionate and, at their worst, jealous or possessive. Their shadow is addiction, control and relationships that chain. Their soul card is The Lovers: the lesson is to turn desire into a choice. Full meaning: The Devil.

XVI · The Tower: the one who tears down what is false

You are upheaval and truth: you cannot stand what is rotten, and when something has to fall you are the one who says so. Your challenge is not to knock down out of impatience what only needed repairing.

Tower people have often lived through sudden changes and come out of them with enviable clarity. They are innovators and disruptors, good in emergencies and in the reforms nobody else dares to start. In love they live relationships that shake them awake. Their shadow is anger and a habit of triggering the collapse before it arrives. Their soul card is The Chariot: after the lightning, take the reins. Full meaning: The Tower.

XVII · The Star: the one who brings hope back

You are hope and inspiration: you give without counting, you believe in people and you have a gift for repair. Your challenge is to protect your own light rather than hand it to everyone who asks.

Star people are generous, idealistic and carry something luminous you notice the moment they walk in. They shine in art, health, social causes and any work that inspires. In love they are romantic and healing, and they tend to attract people who need looking after, so watch that. Their shadow is idealism crashing into reality and overexposure. Their soul card is Strength: hope needs courage to last. Full meaning: The Star.

XVIII · The Moon: the one who feels more than they can explain

You are imagination and deep intuition: you dream, you sense things coming and you catch what lies under the surface. Your challenge is to tell your fears apart from your intuitions, and not get lost in the fog.

Moon people have huge sensitivity, emotional memory and a talent for symbols: art, writing, film, psychology, dream work. In love they are romantic, sometimes insecure, and need a partner who gives them certainty without taking away the mystery. Their shadow is self-deception, anxiety and confusion. Their soul card is The Hermit: you carry the lantern that gets you through the night. Full meaning: The Moon.

XIX · The Sun: the one who lights up the room without trying

You are joy, vitality and clarity: your optimism is contagious and visible success comes easily to you. Your challenge is not to need constant applause, and to accept your cloudy days too.

The Sun is one of the luckiest birth cards and the only one that gives three cards: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune as a bridge card and The Magician as soul card. Sun people are warm, frank and creative, often good with children and comfortable on a stage. In love they are generous and loyal. Their shadow is ego and denying anything that does not shine. Full meaning: The Sun.

XX · Judgement: the one who hears a calling

You are awakening and purpose: you feel you came here for something, and you have a gift for lifting others up. Your challenge is to judge yourself less harshly and forgive what is already behind you.

Judgement people live with a sense of vocation: communication, healing, teaching or any work with meaning suits them. They can rise again after a crisis and help others do the same. In love they believe in second chances. Their shadow is self-criticism, guilt and getting stuck in the past. Their soul card is The High Priestess: a calling is heard in silence. Full meaning: Judgement.

XXI · The World: the one who needs to complete the circle

You are wholeness and integration: you connect loose pieces, move easily between cultures and close cycles with meaning. Your challenge is to finish what you start without waiting for it to be perfect.

World people are open, well travelled, big-picture thinkers who can coordinate what others see as chaos. They stand out in international work, dance, project management and cultural mediation. In love they want a travelling companion more than a hiding place. Their shadow is perfectionism and wanting to take on everything at once. Their soul card is The Empress: wholeness is built with your hands. Full meaning: The World.

0 (XXII) · The Fool: the one who dares to jump

You are freedom and beginnings: you trust, you improvise and you leap where others think it over ten times. Your challenge is to commit to something long enough for it to bear fruit.

The Fool appears when the sum is 22, and it belongs to spontaneous, curious, restless people with a streak of innocence that protects them more than it seems. They shine in entrepreneurship, art, exploration and any brand-new field. In love they need freedom and a partner who laughs with them. Their shadow is recklessness and leaving when things get serious. Their soul card is The Emperor: the leap pays off better with a plan. Full meaning: The Fool.

Birth cards with the Tarot de Marseille

If you read with the Tarot de Marseille, one detail matters: numbers 8 and 11 are swapped. In the Rider-Waite deck VIII is Strength and XI is Justice; in the Marseille deck it is the other way round. That is why the calculator has a deck selector: choose "Marseille" and, if your number is 8 or 11, you will see the right card for your deck. A few names change too (The Hierophant is the Pope, The High Priestess is the Popess), but the core meanings stay the same.

How to use your birth cards

  • As a mirror in your readings. When your personality or soul card turns up in a spread, take it as a sign the question is about you: your way of acting or what you are here to learn.
  • Next to your year card. Your birth card is fixed, but every year has a card that sets the tone for those twelve months. Work out yours with the 2027 tarot year card calculator and see how the two talk to each other.
  • To understand the people around you. Calculate your partner's, your mother's or your best friend's cards. Two Emperors under one roof explain a lot of arguments, and a Moon with a Sun get along better than you would think.
  • For journaling. Put the card in front of you, look at it for five minutes and write down what catches your eye. Repeated a few times, it is one of the best ways to learn tarot.

Frequently asked questions

What tarot card am I based on my birthday?

Add your birth month, day and year, add the digits of the total and, if it is over 22, add them again. The final number is your personality card; if it has two digits, add them to get your soul card. The calculator on this page does it for you in a second.

What is the difference between a personality card and a soul card?

The personality card describes how you act and how others perceive you; the soul card, what moves you inside and what you are here to learn. When both are the same card, its energy shapes your life more clearly than anyone else's.

Why do some people get three birth cards?

It only happens with 19: The Sun reduces to 10 (Wheel of Fortune), and 10 reduces to 1 (The Magician). The Wheel works as a bridge between a Sun personality and a Magician soul.

Is my tarot birth card related to my zodiac sign?

Not directly: the birth card comes from the numerology of your full date, while your sign comes from the position of the Sun. There is a classic correspondence between cards and signs (The Emperor with Aries, The Lovers with Gemini, Strength with Leo and so on), but they are two different systems that can complement each other. See the full list in tarot cards for each zodiac sign.

Is it bad if my birth card is Death, The Devil or The Tower?

Not at all. As birth cards, none of them is "bad": Death speaks of a gift for transformation, The Devil of magnetism and ambition, The Tower of the clarity to see what is not working. Every card has its light and its shadow, the friendly-looking ones included.
