Full moon tarot spread: five cards, a simple ritual and the 2026-2027 moon calendar

The full moon is the peak of the lunar cycle: whatever was planted at the new moon reaches its brightest point and shows itself as it really is. That is why so many tarot readers keep that night for a special reading, the full moon tarot spread, designed to see what has come to light, what has run its course and what to release before the next cycle begins.

You can draw it right here, with five cards from the Major Arcana. Below you will find a step-by-step ritual, a new moon spread, what to ask under each sign's full moon and the full and new moon calendar for 2026 and 2027, with times and zodiac signs.

Draw your full moon spread

Think of the cycle that is closing, take a breath and draw your five cards. Moon times are shown in your local time.

See the full moon calendar further down the page.

The full moon spread: five positions

You can use the full 78-card deck or, like the interactive spread on this page, only the 22 Major Arcana, which give broader answers that are easier to read during a ritual. Lay the cards from left to right, like the moon's arc across the sky:

  1. What the moon lights up. What you can now see clearly, what has come to a head: a truth, an achievement or a situation you can no longer ignore.
  2. What you can release. A fear, a habit, a relationship or an idea about yourself that belongs to the cycle that is ending.
  3. What holds you back. The shadow the light reveals: the block that keeps repeating and is worth facing.
  4. What you have harvested. What you have gained since the last new moon, however small. This is the card you say thank you for.
  5. The message for the next cycle. The advice you carry towards the next new moon.

A sample reading

Say you draw The Star, The Tower, The Hanged Man, The Empress and The Chariot. The moon lights up hope regained after a rough patch. What you can release is the fear that everything will collapse again: the Tower has already happened. What holds you back is waiting for the perfect moment, the Hanged Man's pose. Your harvest is creativity and care, perhaps a project that has grown or a relationship that has warmed up. And the message for the next cycle is clear: take the reins and move. Notice how it tells a story: you do not read the spread card by card, you read it from the first card to the fifth.

Full moon tarot ritual, step by step

  1. Pick your moment. You do not need the exact minute: the full moon's energy is traditionally felt from the night before to the night after. Find time when nobody will interrupt you.
  2. Set up the space. A candle, a glass of water and, if you can, moonlight through the window. Silence your phone.
  3. Cleanse your cards. The full moon is the favourite time for it: put the deck in order, shuffle slowly and leave it in the moonlight for a while.
  4. Write down your question. Something like "What is this moon showing me, and what do I need to let go of?"
  5. Lay out the spread and note what came up in each position before you interpret it.
  6. Release card 2. Write it on a piece of paper and tear it up, or burn it carefully over a plate if you have a safe place to do so.
  7. Give thanks for card 4 and keep your notes. At the next full moon, read them again: it is the best way to see how tarot works with you.

New moon tarot spread: three cards to plant

For the full version, with five cards, a simple ritual and the next new moon dates, see the new moon tarot spread. Here is the quick three-card version.

If the full moon is for harvesting and releasing, the new moon is for beginnings. Its spread is shorter: three cards answering "What do I plant in this cycle?"

  1. The intention: what you want to grow between now and the next full moon.
  2. The resource: the quality or support you can already count on.
  3. The first step: the concrete thing you can do this very week.

You can do it with Vera in the three-card reading: type the question and read the past, present and future positions as intention, resource and first step.

The moon in tarot: the lunar cards

Three Major Arcana cards have a direct link to the moon. The Moon (XVIII) is the card of intuition, dreams and what is not yet clear: if it shows up in your full moon spread, the answer is only half revealed, so give it a few days before deciding. The High Priestess (II), linked to the moon in the esoteric tradition, speaks of inner knowing and secrets coming to light. And The Chariot (VII) corresponds to Cancer, the moon-ruled sign: emotion turning into momentum.

Times are in UTC, calculated from astronomical ephemerides. For New York subtract 5 hours (4 during daylight saving time); for Los Angeles subtract 8 (7 in daylight saving time); in London it is the same as UTC in winter and one hour later in summer. The traditional full moon names (Hunter's, Wolf, Strawberry...) come from North American folk and Indigenous traditions and are now used worldwide. The Hunter's Moon of October 26, 2026 falls in Taurus, a good time to ask about money, the body and what you want to keep. On August 2, 2027 comes the long total solar eclipse that crosses southern Spain and North Africa: in tarot, eclipses are read as doorways, times for observing rather than deciding.

What to ask the tarot under each full moon sign

Every full moon falls in a zodiac sign, and in the esoteric tradition each sign has an allied Major Arcana card. Use it as a support card: take it out of the deck and place it above your spread. The full system, with planets and elements, is in tarot cards for each zodiac sign.

  • Full moon in Aries (ally: The Emperor): where do I need courage, and where am I forcing things?
  • In Taurus (The Hierophant): what is worth keeping, in money and in my body?
  • In Gemini (The Lovers): which conversation is overdue, and which choice am I postponing?
  • In Cancer (The Chariot): what does my home, my family, my refuge need?
  • In Leo (Strength): where am I hiding when I should be shining?
  • In Virgo (The Hermit): which routine, habit or detail needs sorting out?
  • In Libra (Justice): which relationship is out of balance, and which agreement needs reviewing?
  • In Scorpio (Death): what has already ended, even though I am still holding it up?
  • In Sagittarius (Temperance): where do I want to grow, and what am I about to learn?
  • In Capricorn (The Devil): which ambition is really mine, and which is a chain?
  • In Aquarius (The Star): which shared dream or friendship do I want to look after?
  • In Pisces (The Moon): what is my intuition telling me, and what is just fear?

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to do a full moon tarot spread?

On the night of the full moon or the night before. Many readers consider its influence to last three days: the eve, the day itself and the day after. You do not need to do it at the exact minute.

Do I need to charge my tarot cards under the full moon?

It is not required, but it is a very common practice: leaving the deck in full moon light for a few hours is used to "cleanse" it and start fresh, especially after heavy use or difficult questions. What matters is the intention behind it.

What does it mean if The Moon card comes up in a full moon spread?

That the answer is still half hidden. The Moon speaks of intuition and things not fully visible: give it a few days, note your dreams and ask again at the new moon.

Can I do a tarot reading during an eclipse?

Yes, although tradition suggests using eclipses to observe rather than to make big decisions. An eclipse reading is usually read as a heads-up about changes that will unfold over the following months.
