A new year tarot spread is the reading many people do between New Year’s Eve and the first week of January: seven cards to say goodbye to the year that ends and look at what the next one brings, in love, at work and in you. Here you can draw it for free, with no sign-up, using all 78 Rider-Waite cards: shuffle, cut the deck, pick your seven cards and the reading appears right away, card by card and as a whole.
How the new year spread works
Write your intention for the year (or leave the question open), shuffle and cut the deck into three piles. Then pick seven cards from the fan: each one lands in its position, in the order you touch it, and turns over with its illustration and its orientation. At the end you get what the cards say together, the advice for the year and the card-by-card detail, with a link to the meaning of each card.
The reading gets its own link: send it to yourself on WhatsApp or copy it, and look at it again in June, halfway through the year. It is the best way to see what came true and what was up to you.
The seven positions of the new year spread
- What you close. What stays behind with the year that ends: a stage, a burden or a habit you would rather not drag into January.
- What is coming. The main energy of the new year, its overall tone. If a Major Arcana card lands here, the year comes with a big theme.
- In love. What the year brings to your relationships: partner, family and friends, single or not.
- Work and money. What opens up on the practical side: jobs, projects, income and spending.
- Your challenge. What the year asks you to overcome. Not a threat: it is where you are going to grow.
- Your ally. What holds you up when it gets hard: one of your strengths, a person or a resource you can count on.
- The year’s advice. The attitude that serves you best over the next twelve months. Write it on the first page of your planner.
How to read it, step by step
- Look at the whole spread first. Count the Major Arcana: three or more means deep changes; none means the year is played out in everyday life. Notice which suit repeats most.
- Compare what you close with what is coming. Cards 1 and 2 are the step from one year to the next. If they look alike, the new year continues what was already moving; if they clash, there is a turn.
- Read love and work together. Cards 3 and 4 show where your energy will go. If one shines and the other struggles, that is the priority of the year.
- Set the challenge against the ally. Card 6 answers card 5: it is what you have to deal with what the year asks of you.
- Finish with the advice. Card 7 sums up the attitude for the year. Write it in one sentence and keep it.
Your 2027 year card
Besides the spread, everyone has a year card that comes from their birthday. 2027 is an 11 year, the year of Justice: a year of decisions, balance and getting your accounts in order. The 2027 tarot year card calculator gives you your personal card in seconds; place it next to the spread and read it as the backdrop to the seven cards.
A worked example
Intention: “I want 2027 to be calmer than this year.” These seven cards come out, all upright:
- What you close: Ten of Wands. A year of carrying too much: responsibilities that kept piling up.
- What is coming: The Star. Calm after the effort, hope and some room to breathe.
- In love: Two of Cups. A bond between equals: a relationship that finds its balance or one that begins.
- Work and money: Eight of Pentacles. Steady, careful work; no lucky breaks, plenty of craft.
- Your challenge: Four of Pentacles. Letting go of control: the habit of holding on to everything for fear of losing it.
- Your ally: Temperance. Patience and measure: blending things well without going to extremes.
- The year’s advice: Justice. Decide with a clear head and share the load fairly. It is also the card of 2027 itself.
The picture: three Major Arcana (The Star, Temperance and Justice), so the year brings a deep change, not just a new routine. The step from the Ten of Wands to The Star confirms the intention: a burden is dropped and relief arrives. The challenge and the ally answer each other: what is hard is letting go of control (Four of Pentacles) and what helps is measure (Temperance).
The reading in one sentence: “2027 can be calmer if I stop carrying everything and share the load better, at home and at work.” The concrete step: before January is over, delegate or drop one of the tasks you carried alone this year.
A simple ritual for New Year’s Eve
- Find a quiet moment between 31 December and 6 January, ideally after midnight or on the morning of the 1st.
- If you use a physical deck, cleanse it first: the cards start the year fresh too.
- Write an intention for the year on a piece of paper, in positive terms and in the present tense: “This year I protect my rest.”
- Draw the spread and note the seven cards under your intention, with one word for each.
- Keep the paper (or the link to the reading) and come back to it halfway through the year.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to do a new year tarot spread?
Between New Year’s Eve and the first week of January is the most common, but any beginning works: 1 January, your birthday (there is a birthday template in create your own spread) or the start of a project.
What if a hard card lands on “What is coming”?
It does not announce a bad year. Difficult cards in that position usually point to the theme that will need attention, not to an outcome. Read it together with your ally and the year’s advice: they almost always show how to get through it.
Can I do it for someone else?
Yes, with their permission and keeping them in mind as you shuffle. It works well as a game at a New Year’s Eve dinner: everyone draws their own spread and shares the link on WhatsApp.
Does it predict what will happen month by month?
No. It reads the tone of the year and what depends on you. For specific questions during the year you have the three-card reading and the new moon spread, which you can repeat every month.
