Love tarot reading: five cards for your relationship

The love tarot reading on Tarot Vera Luna has five cards and one idea behind it: to look at the relationship from both sides, not only from yours. It is free, needs no account, and works for a couple that already exists, for someone who has just appeared or for a relationship that is ending. Each position gets its own reading, and at the end you see what the five cards say together.

How the love reading works

You type your question, shuffle and tap five cards from the fan. Each one lands in a position and turns over with its illustration, its name and its orientation. Below you get a reading for each position, with the card's meaning in love, and an overall reading that brings the five together.

What each position means

  1. You. How you stand in the relationship right now: what you feel, what you show and what you may not be saying.
  2. The other person. Their place in the relationship. This is not reading their mind: it is how they appear in it, seen from your reading.
  3. The bond. What exists between the two of you. It is usually the card people talk about most afterwards.
  4. The obstacle. What weighs, slows or stands in the way. Sometimes it is external; very often it is already in one of the first two cards.
  5. Where it goes. The relationship's direction if nothing changes. A tendency, not a verdict.

How to ask a love tarot question

The questions that work best are about the relationship, not about the other person: “What does this relationship need now?”, “What am I holding on to that no longer serves me?”, “What can we build from here?”. “Do they love me?” or “Will they come back?” are questions tarot cannot answer on someone else's behalf, and this spread, with its first two positions, will show you that very quickly.

How to read a love spread, step by step

The reading gives you the meaning of each card, but the real reading comes from connecting them. This order helps you not to get lost:

  1. Reread your question. Everything that comes up is read in relation to it. If you asked what the relationship needs, do not turn the spread into “do they love me?”.
  2. Look at cards 1 and 2 together. You and the other person. Are they speaking the same language (two Cups, for example), or is one in the heart and the other in the head (Cups against Swords)?
  3. Read the bond as a third character. It is not the sum of the two of you: it is what exists between you, with its own needs.
  4. Look for the obstacle in the first cards. Ask whether card 4 repeats something from card 1 or 2. When it does, the brake is not coming from outside.
  5. Read the direction as a tendency. Card 5 shows where the relationship is heading if nothing changes. If you do not like it, go back to card 1: it is the only one that depends on you.
  6. Close with one sentence. Sum up the spread in a line you can remember. If you cannot, look again at how two of the cards relate.

A worked love tarot reading

Question: “What does our relationship need right now?” A couple of several years, no big problems, but with the feeling of running on autopilot. These five cards come up, all upright:

  • You: the Four of Cups. Apathy, a little boredom, looking away while someone offers you a cup. You are in the relationship, but somewhat absent.
  • The other person: the Knight of Cups. Someone approaching with an emotional offer: a plan, a gesture, a wish to feel excited again.
  • The bond: the Two of Cups. The foundation is good: mutual connection, affection and respect. This is not a broken relationship.
  • The obstacle: the Eight of Swords. Feeling tied up by your own thoughts. The ropes are looser than they look.
  • Where it goes: Temperance. Balance, patience, finding a rhythm that works for both of you.

How it reads together: the other person is offering something (Knight of Cups) and you are not picking it up (Four of Cups). The bond is healthy, so the problem is not love. The Eight of Swords connects with the first card: the brake is in your head, in a fixed idea of how the relationship “should” be. If you loosen that idea, Temperance points to a calm readjustment, no drama. Closing sentence: “The relationship is fine; it is my turn to be present again.”

If the Two of Cups had come up reversed, the reading would change a lot: the connection would be out of balance and the real question would be what has broken between you.

Cards that come up often in love readings

These are some of the cards that appear most in love spreads and what they usually indicate. Take it as a starting point: the position they fall in changes the nuance.

  • The Lovers: union, a conscious choice, shared values. Reversed: doubts, disagreement, a choice being avoided.
  • Ten of Cups: harmony, a shared project, feeling at home. Reversed: idealising, distance within the family.
  • Six of Cups: nostalgia, tenderness, someone from the past. Reversed: staying anchored in what used to be.
  • Three of Swords: pain, disappointment, a truth that hurts. Reversed: the wound starts to close.
  • Five of Cups: loss, looking only at what was spilled. Reversed: accepting it and seeing what is still there.
  • The Devil: intense attraction, attachment, jealousy or dependence. Reversed: letting go of a tie that held you.
  • The Moon: confusion, insecurity, things left unsaid. Reversed: the fog lifts and the truth comes out.

Single, dating, together or after a breakup

The five positions are always the same, but what you ask, and where you look first, changes with your situation:

  • Single: ask “What do I need to open up to a relationship?”. Read card 2 as what you are looking for or attracting, and card 3 as your way of bonding.
  • Getting to know someone: ask “What could grow between us?”. Look at the bond and the direction: whether there is a foundation and where it points.
  • In a stable relationship: ask “What does our relationship need now?”. Look at the obstacle and whether it repeats in cards 1 or 2.
  • In a crisis: ask “What is happening between us, and what can I do?”. Card 1 matters most: it is the part that depends on you.
  • After a breakup: ask “What is left for me to close in this story?”. Watch card 1 and the obstacle, and pay attention to the Six and the Five of Cups.

Common mistakes in love readings

  • Asking about the other person as if they were an object. “Will they do what I want?” leaves out someone who decides for themselves. Ask about the relationship or your part in it.
  • Repeating the reading until you get what you hoped for. The second spread does not correct the first; it only adds noise.
  • Reading each card on its own. A hard card in the obstacle does not mean the same thing when the bond is the Two of Cups as when it is the Five of Cups.
  • Reading in the heat of the moment. Right after an argument, any card seems to confirm what you already think. Wait until you are a little calmer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a love tarot reading work if I am single?

Yes. The positions “the other person” and “the bond” can speak of someone who has not arrived yet, or of your relationship with yourself. Ask about what you want to build, not about a specific person.

Can a love reading tell me if they love me?

Not directly: tarot does not read anyone's mind. What you can see is how that person appears in your spread (card 2) and what exists between you (card 3). If the King of Cups lands in the second position, for example, the reading speaks of someone emotionally steady, not of a “yes, they love you”.

Will my ex come back?

It is one of the most common questions and one of the least helpful. Try “What do I need to close this relationship?” or “What is stopping me from moving on?”. If the Six of Cups or Judgement still lands in the last position, read it as the past still being alive in you, not as a return date.

Can the love spread answer a yes or no question?

It is not built for that. Five positions give you nuance, not a verdict. For a closed love question, the yes or no tarot reading with a single card works better.

How often can I repeat the love reading?

With the same question, let a few days pass or wait for something real to change in the relationship. With a different question, you can do it whenever you like.

Is a love tarot reading a prediction?

No. It is a way of sorting out what you feel and seeing the relationship from a little distance. Tarot Vera Luna is entertainment, not a psychic hotline.
